In short
The legal test is the same everywhere: assess the risk and control it so far as is reasonably practicable. What differs by sector is what you actually have on site, how much of it you control, and what happens to people if it fails. That is what these pages are about.
A warehouse has space and can separate. A housing association has neither space nor control over what residents buy. A recycling operator receives damaged cells as its raw material. Those are genuinely different problems, and generic guidance helps none of them.

Technology department tool batteries, pupil e-scooters and staff e-bikes, in premises with evacuation duties and no procurement control over what arrives.
Battery safety in the NHS and care homes
Sleeping accommodation, dependent occupants and progressive horizontal evacuation. The setting where siting matters more than cabinet specification.
Battery safety for housing associations
Residents charging e-bikes in flats, hallways and stairwells, with no control over what they buy. Prohibition without provision moves the risk out of sight.
Battery safety for recycling and waste operators
Damaged and end-of-life cells arriving in volume, often hidden in mixed waste. The sector where quarantine is the core process, not a contingency.

Customer packs of unknown history, conversion kits over the counter, and many batteries on charge at once in a commercial unit.

Guest e-bikes charged in bedrooms and corridors, on premises with sleeping accommodation and guests who do not know the building.

What every sector has in common
Three things hold regardless of setting, and they are worth stating once here rather than eight times:
- Count energy, not items. Watt-hours determine what a failure releases. Two packs the same physical size can differ several times over. How to work it out.
- Where charging happens is the highest-value decision available, and it is usually free. Off escape routes, away from sleeping accommodation.
- Decide where a damaged pack goes before you find one. Every sector improvises this, and improvising it is how a swollen pack ends up beside a fire door.
