How to choose a battery storage cabinet

Work through eight questions: what you are storing, total watt-hours, storage or charging, tested performance, gas handling, detection, siting, and who is accountable. Get the test evidence in writing. If a supplier cannot say whether the fire in the test started inside the cabinet, that answers the question for you.

1. What exactly are you storing?

Healthy packs, damaged packs and waste cells are three different requirements. Damaged and waste cells should not share a cabinet with healthy stock — they have a materially higher chance of failing, and quarantine is a separate arrangement. If you need both, you need two solutions, and the quarantine one is usually the more urgent.

2. What is the total watt-hour figure?

Add up the energy content of everything that will be inside at once, and add headroom. Ten minutes with the pack labels, covered in capacity and watt-hours explained. Do this before you look at any product, or you will end up sizing on price.

3. Storage only, or charging too?

This changes the product and roughly doubles the budget. Fitting a socket into a storage cabinet does not make it a charging cabinet — it makes it an untested one. See charging cabinets for what actually differs.

4. What was this cabinet tested to?

The question behind the question: was the fire started inside the cabinet or outside it? EN 14470-1 tests an external fire; VDMA 24994 initiates a runaway inside. Both are legitimate documents; only one describes the scenario you are buying for. Full detail on EN 14470-1 vs VDMA 24994 vs UL 9540A.

Ask for: the standard, the test house, the duration achieved, the pass criterion, what was inside during the test, and confirmation that the test applies to this model rather than to a comparable one. In writing.

5. How does it handle gas?

Vented gas is flammable and toxic, and it appears before flame does. Some cabinets duct externally, others manage it internally. Either can be appropriate — what matters is that you know which, that you install it as specified, and that the arrangement is recorded. A cabinet designed for external ducting and installed without it is not the product that was tested.

6. What detects a problem, and who hears it?

Gas detection gives earlier warning than smoke detection for this failure mode. The more important question is where the signal goes. A local sounder in an empty warehouse at 3am is not a control. Connect it to whatever your premises already monitors, or accept that the cabinet is a containment measure only.

7. Where will it go?

Off escape routes. Away from sleeping accommodation. Accessible to the fire service. Isolator reachable without opening the doors. Floor loading adequate — a large cabinet is heavy, and heavier again when full. And close enough to where people work that they actually use it rather than leaving packs on the bench beside it.

Siting decisions beat specification decisions more often than the market admits. A modest cabinet in the right place outperforms an excellent one in a corridor.

8. Who owns it once it arrives?

Name the person responsible for keeping it in use as intended: doors closed, capacity not exceeded, damaged packs not put inside, periodic checks done, detection tested. Cabinets fail in service through drift rather than through fire, and drift has no owner unless you appoint one.

Warning signs in supplier literature

  • “Fireproof” used as a claim without a duration or a standard next to it.
  • Any statement that a cabinet is “required by UK regulation” — no UK regulation requires one.
  • A standard cited without saying which model was tested, or citing UL 9540A for a cabinet of loose packs.
  • Capacity given only in “number of batteries” with no watt-hour rating.
  • A charging version with no stated total supply rating or isolation arrangement.
  • Test evidence that cannot be produced, or is “available on request” indefinitely.

Frequently asked questions

What size battery cabinet do I need?

Size on total watt-hours of everything that will be inside at once, plus headroom for stock growth and for pack sizes increasing over time — then check the physical fit against your tallest and widest pack. Pack count is not a useful basis: two packs of the same size can differ several times over in energy content.

Is a more expensive cabinet always better?

No. Price tracks capacity, tested duration and whether charging is included, and paying for a longer tested duration than your situation justifies is a poor use of budget compared with fixing siting or procurement. The cheapest genuinely useful improvement is usually moving charging off the escape route, which costs nothing.

Can I use a gun safe or a document safe for batteries?

No. Those products are designed to resist attack or to protect paper from an external fire, and they are typically sealed in ways that make internal gas pressure a hazard rather than a managed output. Neither test scenario resembles a battery failing inside the enclosure. Use a cabinet designed and tested for batteries.

Should I buy new or used?

Used can be reasonable for a storage cabinet if you can establish the model, its test evidence and that seals, hinges and any vents are intact. Be more cautious with charging cabinets, where the electrical installation and any detection need verifying by someone competent. A used cabinet with no traceable model or test documentation is a metal box, and should be priced as one.
